The 7 Deadly Sins

of the Petty Bourgeoisie

This opera follows Anna as she goes out into the world to make money to send home to her family.  Along the way, she finds that sinning against capitalism prevents her from succeeding in the world.  Our concept led us to representing Anna’s dancer personification as a puppet more and more entangled in her own compromises.  As the opera progresses, Anna acquires more marionette strings.  The family hangs on the back wall as ever-present used marionettes.  This meta-theatrical concept led to vaudevillian lighting with bulbs along the sides of the stage, sharp edged follow spots, set pieces that light up, and strong color.
